Apple Claims 50% of Portable Gaming Market

Steve Jobs announced today that the iPod Touch alone outsells the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP combined, not just in America but worldwide. Jobs said that 1.5 billion games and entertainment apps have been downloaded from the App Store. This fact only takes into consideration the iPod Touch and not the iPhone which would make it an even bigger market lead.

There have been some concerned comments questioning the fact seeing as only 120 million iOS devices have been sold worldwide. Apple have been contacted about this discrepancy.

Apple Announces iTunes 10

Along with the new iPod line, iTunes 10 has been announced, with something different a new logo. The major new feature is Apple’s Ping Social Network which will let you follow people, including artists, post comments, check out custom song and album charts and even find over 17,000 concert listings.

The Ping network isn’t exclusive to just iTunes 10 on Mac and PC but also works on the iPhone and iPod Touch. It’ll be avaible for download in a few hours.

iPod Nano Re-Designed

Apple has announced it’s 6th generation iPod Nano, a complete new design as usual but with this new design comes some loss of features. It now sports a multi-touch display which allows double tap to zoom and a two finger gesture to rotate. It’s 46% smaller and 42% lighter than the previous model and has volume buttons on the side along with a clip on the back. The battery will last you 24 hours of audio playback but seems there is no sign of video playback and the camera has gone.

So overall you gain the multi-touch display but lose video playback and video recording using the built-in camera on the 5th generation nano. Prices are set at 8GB for £129/$149 and £159/$179 for 16GB, pre-orders are being taken now.

Update: It seems that according to Apple Reps the iPod Nano isn’t running the iOS just a OS that is very similar in appearance.

Apple Announces iOS 4.1

Apple announced iOS 4.1 which fixes many of the issues that were causing major issues, fixing the issues with the proximity sensor, Bluetooth and the iPhone 3G performance along with completely new features such as HDR camera mode. Also HD video uploads over WiFi, Game Center and TV show rentals. Look for the update to hit iTunes sometime next week as a free download for your iPhone or iPod touch.

Possible Next-Generation iPod Touch & iPod Nano Cases Appear Online

Less than a week before an Apple event is set to take place, cases for devices which have been rumored to be featured at the event appear online. The picture comes courtesy of Chinese case retailer X-Doria. The image seems to show what appears to be a 4th generation iPod Touch, which is rumored to have the front facing camera built-in for FaceTime.
The second case is said to be for the iPod Nano 6th generation, but it could easily be a case for a new iPod shuffle. It also appears to match a 1.7 inch Apple touchscreen that turned up in Taiwan.

The September event usually revolves around music and the iPod family so we know there’s updates coming just not sure on which devices.

Surik Creates Fix For PDF Security Issues

Surik, creator of the Cydia store has rolled out a patch that fixes PDF security issues that are fixed by the 4.0.2 update along with ones that Apple hasn’t fixed yet. Seems that if you want to be secure and protected the only thing to do is to jailbreak your device, escpailly if your running a first gen iPhone or iPod Touch. The package can be found in Cydia.

redsn0w Jailbreak Still Works on 4.0.2 for iPhone 3G & iPod Touch 2G

If for some strange reason you updated to 4.0.2 when Apple released it to patch the PDF exploit that was used for the JailbreakMe jailbreak and your running a iPhone 3G or iPod Touch 2G (Non MC Model) then you can still jailbreak your new protected iOS. The current version of the jailbreak tool redsn0w will still work on both the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G as long as it’s a Non-MC model. Just point redsn0w to the 4.0 firmware to ‘trick’ it then you’ll be away with your new jailbreak.
