Push Notifications Being Sent To The Wrong iPhone

Some iPhone users have been experiencing strange problems with their iPhone receiving AIM messages which were not Apple iPhone 3G WWDC 2009sent to them, but Apple’s push notification system sent it to the wrong people. However it’s not Apple’s fault as some believed it to be.

The iPhone generates unique private/public keys upon activation that identity each handset, so that they correct messages can be sent to the correct device. However using unlocking tools breaks this as they use duplicated keys to facilitate illicit use. Now that single identifiers have been registered to multiple phones instant messages, messages can be sent to any of those devices.

iPod Touch With Camera & Microphone in Production?

According to a Wired.com report, Apple may have already started to manufacture a new iPod Touch with a built in iPod Touchcamera and microphone.

A well-connected source tells us those rumors are on the money, and that Apple’s factories in China are already manufacturing iPod Touch models with integrated cameras and microphones. An Apple spokesman declined to comment when reached by phone.

Their source believes that the new devices will go on sale within 2/3 months. They would bring VOIP to capabilities to customers as well as voice commands, video capture and compatibility with many more iPhone applications.

Reports Suggest iPhone 3G Could Be Coming To T-Mobile UK

Register Hardware and guardian.co.uk both suggest that the iPhone 3G, last years model, could be on the British Apple iPhone 3G WWDC 2009carrier T-Mobile within the next few months. However O2 would still keep the 3GS exclusivity.

“This represents a major shift in how Apple markets the iPhone,” The Register said, “which currently relies on network exclusives to get a decent subsidy; giving that up shows either greater confidence or reflected disappointment in how O2 has priced up the latest offering.”

The report from guardian.co.uk talks about how both Orange & Vodafone are interested in providing the iPhone on their networks as well. If that were to come to pass, all of the U.K.’s major cell phone carriers would provide some version of the iPhone, but would this mean it would need to become unlocked or multiple carrier restrictions made?

Though exclusivity for the iPhone with one carrier is the most common arrangement, non-exclusive deals are not unheard of. Since 2008, Apple has signed a number of non-exclusive carrier contracts in various countries.

IPCC Tethering No Longer Works in iPhone OS 3.1 Beta 2

The IPCC tethering hack used to allow use of tethering even if your carrier did not support it has now been stopped in TetheringiPhone OS 3.1 Beta 2. It’s not a surprise that Apple would fix this as not all carries have sorted out price plans for tethering.

If your still on iPhone OS 3.0 and don’t upgrade to 3.1 when it is officially released then the loophole will still be there and you can still use it at your own risk as if your carrier releases your using tethering without paying for it then can charge you at full data rates.

Apple Seeds iPhone OS 3.1 Beta 2 To Developers

Yesterday Apple provided iPhone developers with Beta 2 of the OS 3.1 firwamre. This release didn’t mention any changes, although the first beta included minor feature adjustments without Apples mentioning. Beta 2 will most likely contain bug fixes which address issues in Beta 1. Along with this a updated version of the iPhone SDK for both Leopard and Snow Leopard have been also released.

Update: I’ve just found that beta 2 also introduces a public API for manipulating live video. Developers are still testing the capabilities but it could open the door for many interesting apps in the near future.

Geohot Releases His Own Soft Unlock For iPhone 3GS

Geohot has released his own unlocking software, like ultrasn0w, for the iPhone 3GS. Playing off the Dev-Team’s namingiPhone 3GS Logo scheme he called it Purplesn0w. The user is required to have a jailbroken device so that the unlock can be downloaded through Cydia, like the Dev-Teams unlock.

Geohot also claims that his unlock is superior to the Dev-Teams unlock:

Now I know you here a lot about different colors of sn0w, but I’m here to tell you why purplesn0w is the best. First off, what is purplesn0w? It’s a soft unlock for your 3GS that I’d actually use day to day. It’s not a daemon that takes any resources, and it doesn’t add a task to your baseband. It’s very close to a true unlock. All it does is patch three files, CommCenter, lockdownd, and your wildcard activation plist(which you need, activate w at&t sim first, no hacktivation support yet). That’s it, no other files are installed. Props to Oranav for the at+xlog exploit!

Apple Announces 1.5 Billion Downloads In App Store

Apple announced yesterday that they have had a total of 1.5 billion app downloads on just over 65,000 apps. There App Storeare currently 40 million iPhones and iPod Touches that are able to run the App Store, and over 100,000 developers registered in the iPhone Developer program making all these apps.

Apple today announced that customers have downloaded more than 1.5 billion applications in just one year from its revolutionary App Store, the largest applications store in the world. The App Store is also growing at an incredible pace with more than 65,000 apps and more than 100,000 developers in the iPhone? Developer Program.

“The App Store is like nothing the industry has ever seen before in both scale and quality,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “With 1.5 billion apps downloaded, it is going to be very hard for others to catch up.”

Why Apple Need To Fix 3.0 Soon

With the vast collection of new features from the new iPhone OS 3.0, also came the vast amount of problems it’iphone_os_3s causing.

As a 3.0 user myself I have been affected by some of these, such as the WiFi connectivity issues which have caused hundreds of users problems.
The battery life using 3.0, for some has dropped drastically and I have myself seen a bit of a drop in the batteries performance.
Destructive video editing on the iPhone 3GS. which Apple has fixed in 3.1. Also some unknown problem with 3.0 which causes the device to over heat and the battery to drop drastically as I experienced whilst using Qik to live stream a video.

These are just a few problems that 3.0 users are having and Apple really needs to sort these out, as a lot of people rely on there iPhone to last throughout the day, we don’t want it to be like the Palm Pre do we. Hopefully these will be fixed in 3.1 and anyone using the 3.1 Beta feel free to drop a comment on if any of these problems, or others, have been fixed or even maybe caused by that update.

Apple Patents Changing Voice Output On The iPhone

This patent describes the ways to alter the voice output from the iPhone, such as the playback of audio files. Most would think this would be used for reading text from an eBook, but the patent suggests that it would be for audio and not text.

Despite the restrictions involved in playing back audio files, users of media devices may wish to change the audio output of audio files. A mother, for example, might wish to change the narrator’s voice in a pre-recorded, commercially available audiobook to her own voice, so that her child can listen to the audiobook as narrated in the mother’s voice in her absence. In another scenario, a student listening to a lecture as a podcast file might want to change the audio of certain sections of the lecture to sound like someone else’s voice, so as to emphasize important parts of the lecture.
