3rd Generation iPod Touch Found in Online Logs

The same way that the iPhone 3GS came to light, there’s now online logs of a new 3rd Gen iPod Touch device being usiPod Touched recently. Analytics firm Pinch Media, which spotted the iPhone 3GS online last year, now says’s it’s been seeing the device string (iPod 3,1) for the new iPod multiple times since April of this year.

The usage pattern shows that Apple are testing the new iPod Touch to ensure there are no major flaws before the device goes live, which is presumed to be in September.

Signs of the string iPod 3,1 were first seen in early iPhone 3.0 beta firmware, the hardware ID was shown alongside present and unreleased Apple handhelds, at the time. As with the iPhone 3GS, Apple’s naming scheme seems to show that this will be a substantial update, camera perhaps? The first number of the string always refers to a major generation leap whilst the second refers to less substantial updates. The current iPod Touch is listed as iPod 2,1,

Trying to determine the release date based on this data is difficult as the iPhone 3GS was seen 8 months before its release however there is a lot more things to test in a phone, therefore making it more likely the release will be in September, as the iPod Touch has always been updated in a special music themed event held in September.

iPod With Camera Looking More Likely?

You will remember as the iPhone 3GS rumours were flying around that some mock-up pictures were sent out of what an iPod Nano would look like with a camera.

But now things are looking even more likely as now we have the first cases with matching camera cut-outs for the iPod Nano in addition to an iPod Touch case with similar cut-outs that have been leaked on the internet. This morning TechCrunch is claiming that a “massive number of camera modules” for iPods have been ordered per information provided by a source in Asia. Take this all to be true and we should see the announcement of a new iPod Touch and iPod Nano with photo/video recording, sometime around September per Apple’s usual release pattern.

iPhone SMS Vulnerability Found

At the SyScan conference in Singapore, Charlie Miller described a vulnerability in the iPhone’s SMS system, a flaw that Apple iPhone 3G WWDC 2009could “allow an attacker to remotely install and run unsigned software code with root access to the phone.

It’s unlikely that this will be exploited vastly, but it’s still a very serious risk due to the sheer numbers of iPhones out there. According to the security researched said that the attack “exploits a weakness in the way iPhones handle text messages received via SMS (Short Message Service),” however he has made an agreement with Apple to keep the details out of the press so that Apple have a chance to fix it before someone else figures it out and makes matters more serious.

Miller only gave the following information concering the vulnerability: “The SMS vulnerability allows an attacker to run software code on the phone that is sent by SMS over a mobile operator’s network. The malicious code could include commands to monitor the location of the phone using GPS, turn on the phone’s microphone to eavesdrop on conversations, or make the phone join a distributed denial of service attack or a botnet.

Miller will be going into more detail of this at the Black Hat USA expo in Las Vegas later on this years, giving Apple a chance to patch it. Apple have planned to get a fix ready for later this month.
