iPhone 4 To Have 512MB of RAM

Apple are never open about the actual real specs of the iPhone. We know the iPhone 4 uses a A4 chip but we don’t know the clock speed but for Apple to keep up with todays competition it’s been reported that the new iPhone will have 512MB of RAM instead of the 256MB that the iPhone 3GS has. This will give a lot more head room for games, multitasking and other memory hungry apps.

This will also hopefully mean that for the jailbreak community that with the extra CPU speed and double the RAM that WinterBoard and other modifications will run a lot smoother and you can have a lot more complex themes.

iPhone 4 Might Be Able To Playback 1080p Video?

Apple’s official specs on the iPhone 4 state that it can run H.264 video up to 720p at 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats. However if you remember back a few months it was shown that the 3GS could playback 720p/1080i video, although it was not officially supported, see related for the link. So this has made me think that due to the bump in CPU power, now that the iPhone is running Apple’s A4 chip that it should be able to playback full 1080p video.

With the extended battery and retina display, I can imagine that watching HD video on the iPhone 4 will be stunning but I can understand why Apple doesn’t include it official as it does save battery life playing 720p instead of full 1080p.

Also if you plug your iPhone 4 into your TV it would be a useful device to watch HD movies without the need for BluRay.

O2 Imposes 3G Data Limits for iPhone 4 Users

Similar to AT&T in the US, O2 has now put a data limit on pay monthly users. O2 had already put a 750MB limit of Pay As You Go users but have now changed there unlimited plans to have limited data caps. The cost for additional data isn’t that steap and for those who need it shouldn’t be that much of an issue but it opens up a competitive advantage to any of the multiple UK carriers who offer true unlimited data.

iPhone 4 Coming To O2, Orange, T-Mobile, Vodafone And Three in the UK

It began with O2 exclusivity but now most of the major UK carriers sell the iPhone, Three has just been added to that list of carriers which is an intresting move. Three usually offer very good deals and make the devices very cheap so we could possibly see a cheaper iPhone 4 from Three.

All the carries have confirmed that they will be selling the iPhone 4 from June 24th so it’s going to be an interesting launch and a strong amount of competition.

As promised below are the download links for all the iDevices, that support iOS 4.  Along with the beta of iTunes 9.2 which is required to upgrade to the GM release (build 8A293). These have been tested and will work and I’ve read that you don’t need your UUID to be linked to a developer account for it to work. Also there is a jailbreak for the GM release.

Spirit Released for iPhone, iPod Touch & iPad

The day has finally come, comex has released Spirit, the first userland jailbreak since the 1.x era. It runs on the latest iPhone OS firmwares (3.1.2, 3.1.3 and 3.2). Spirit is an untethered jailbreak which comes as great news to many 3rd generation iPod Touch & iPhone 3GS users who have the MC models who were stuck with a tethered jailbreak for months.

It works on all the iDevices but on the iPad, all this is still sort of beta. Some packages in Cydia, not designed for iPad, might screw up your system and require you to restore.

You can download it from SpiritJB.com

iPhone OS 4.0 Only For 3G and 3GS?

According to a source, the new iPhone OS 4.0, which is rumored to be shown at the upcoming Apple event; will include multitasking, which has been wanted for a long time but many iPhone users but only those who jailbreak the device can use this feature. The source also says there will be a new UI, “to make navigating through the OS easier and more efficient” and also OS-wise mutli-touch gestures. However I see it unlikely that Apple will majorly change the UI of the OS as they like to keep things familiar.

The source also says how they will also be “some brand new syncing ability for the contacts and calendar applications” but that the new OS will only be available for the iPhone 3G and 3GS, this makes sense for the multitasking as the iPhone 2G doesn’t have enough RAM to be able to multitask properly.

iPhone OS 4.0 To Have Contacts On The Home Screen?

Apple recently applied for a patent to put contacts on the iPhone home screen. The patent gives pretty solid evidence that the next iPhone OS iteration will include this feature.

The patent shows that the custom icons for contacts won’t just be for speed dialing but will be able to perform wide range of things, such as launching any app you specify that is personalized to the contact or display information about the contact.

One of the options has the icon for the contact that shows up on your home screen based on the persons proximity to you, so if someone gets within a certain range to you then they will show up on your home screen, however this will probably only work on iPhones or possibly phones that have GPS.

The icon can also be used to invoke one or more applications that are personalized to the contact. The icon can be modified to display information related to the contact. In one aspect, an icon associated with an entity can be temporarily displayed on the mobile device based on the proximity of the mobile device to the entity.

Vodafone iPhone Now On Sale in UK

An email was sent out today to all Vodafone customers about the release of the iPhone on their network today. Vodafone has joined the other 3 carriers of the iPhone in the UK (O2, Orange and Tesco Mobile.)

According to Vodafone, they estimate they will be able to sell 50,000 iPhones by the end of the day. If they achieve this they will beat Orange’s launch record of 30,000 and outsell the Google Nexus One, which only sold 20,000 in it’s first week.
